Via Infectious Greed, here is an economics blog that you might want to visit from time to time. Its name is Financial Crisis and Recession. Lots of graphs but the writing is surprisingly good and not too far over the top.
You might want to check out their article on prices and consumption in November. They postulate that the volume of consumer purchases actually increased while the dollar volume declined. They add quickly that a few more months of data are needed to draw any conclusion.
They also have an older, longer article examining the various alternatives that are available to stimulate the economy. It was written on December 8th but is not outdated. They seem to go at things quite objectively and their preferred solution surprised me. They advocate a sales tax holiday with the federal government making up the lost state revenues.
Enjoy it.
